After a qualifying round saw Eden, Felix and Giovanni from Year 5 as our top three performing pupils for memory, we progressed to the semi-finals of the competition.
We then competed with primary schools across the trust to be a top-performing school, before we took the crown with an incredible 29 out of 30 in the grand final.
More than just a memory test, The Big Quiz teaches pupils revision methods which they can apply in their future learning. By developing their thinking tools, young people become self-reflective learners through metacognition, understanding how they learn and process information.
Mrs C. Jewell, a member of our teaching staff who led on The Big Quiz here at Meon Junior School this year, reflected on an outstanding victory and the importance of the quiz.
“Eden, Felix and Giovanni have shown remarkable confidence and resilience to triumph in The Big Quiz this year; they should be so proud of themselves.
“It’s not just about getting pupils to remember things; it’s about showing our young people how they can all get better at learning and be their best self through metacognition”.

All questions which feature in The Big Quiz are themed around topics already encountered by our pupils, as they develop the best ways for each of them to solidify their knowledge.
As Eden, Felix and Giovanni progressed towards the final, they were required to demonstrate an exceptional level of self-belief and determination in their memory and thinking skills.
All of them spoke of their personal pride in such a fantastic achievement, as they underestimated how far they could make it in the competition.
Felix said: “I’m quite surprised because we had to learn 15 subjects and it was really hard to remember all the things we had to memorise”.
Mrs S. Paine, Executive Headteacher at Meon Way Federation, expressed her immense pride for our winning pupils, and why The Big Quiz matters for young people.
“This is such a wonderful achievement for Eden, Felix and Giovanni to have won The Big Quiz for Meon Junior School in the primary category.
“They’ve demonstrated our four key values exceptionally and to see the development of their memory and metacognitive skills is what The Big Quiz is all about.
“The quiz celebrates all our participants across Meon Way Federation who showed such a high level of application to improve their learning strategies which will support them as lifelong learners”.
A huge congratulations to Eden, Felix and Giovanni for bringing the trophy to Meon Junior School, as well as all our pupils for their brilliant engagement with The Big Quiz 2026!
