Year 1 trip to Fort Nelson

April 14, 2026 12:46pm

Year 1 children have visited Fort Nelson recently to support their learning of Florence Nightingale and her impact on improving hospitals and patient care.

Although Florence Nightingale herself never worked at Fort Nelson, this trip offered rich opportunities for children to explore:

- Conditions similar to those in the Crimean War, helping them imagine what hospitals were like before Nightingale’s reforms

-  Life in the past, including how soldiers lived, worked, and were treated when injured

- The importance of cleanliness, organisation, and care, key themes in Nightingale’s story

- Hands‑on learning, allowing children to connect historical ideas with real spaces and artefacts
