At Meon Way Federation we strive to make every child a reader and share a love of reading both at school and at home. To support this early reading is taught from Year R through the Read Write Inc programme.
Read Write Inc lessons take place daily and are fast paced to engage all children. We teach children to read and write sounds, children practise reading and spelling words containing these sounds, then we give children de-codable books containing sounds and words they can read.
Children need to know sounds – not letter names – to read words. The sounds are grouped into 3 sets and the children progress onto the next set as soon as they are secure in their sound knowledge. We say the sounds in a way to make them easy to blend into a word and aim to eliminate the ‘uh’ at the end of the sound so we say ‘c’ ‘a’ ‘t’ rather than cuh a tuh.
A video of the sounds is available here – Read Write Inc Phonics: How to say the Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3 sounds
Look out for our character Fred who helps children learn to blend sounds into a word. Fred can only speak in sounds - he says the sounds c-a-t, and then children help him to say the word.
When they are learning to read the children work in progress groups to master each level of phonics and reading. This ensures that every child is working at their challenge point. Pupils are regularly assessed and grouped according to their Phonics knowledge with additional interventions in place to address any misconceptions or gaps in sound knowledge. This ensures that all children are able to make excellent progress.
